I've never been keen on turning my career into an epic, nor did I start out as a prodigy. As for CVs, I hardly send them any more.
But I've been working in design for over fifteen years, along a path with more turns than a CV tends to show. I started out freelancing in communication design, and for a while, on a research grant in design journalism, I studied how design gets talked about rather than doing it. I spent years in two dimensions, with grids and type, until the composition called for depth, and pursuing it is how I ended up in 3D. Since then, I've been on both sides of the table: I've made things and taught others how to make them as a guest lecturer, and I've designed and directed other designers as a creative director. And more than once I've gone back to the place I think matters most: being someone who still has something to learn.
These days, 3D is the tool I use most, but it doesn't define what I do. I create images of products and spaces, as well as animation, and I've never set aside editorial design or visual identity, which have brought me clients from abroad and others closer to home. What I'm after is nearly always the same: making an idea clearer without making it poorer.
Grids left me with a useful kind of distrust: what looks right is only right once it's been measured. I can spend hours on an almost invisible detail, like a product's shadow that has to land in the right spot, and then straight away ask whether that image needed to exist in that form at all. I'm not looking for a signature that overshadows the project. I'm looking for the solution that seems obvious once you've found it. That's why I like work that looks simple on the surface and is demanding underneath, especially the projects that turn up before they've taken shape, with more questions than references.
I'm based in the Aveiro region, in Portugal. When I step away from the screen, it's often on my bike, along roads where the fires left the landscape black, and that's where I notice light the most. I like silence, and I've never believed that more noise makes an idea better.
This is what I'd say about myself, but the projects have words that reach where mine can't.
Let's work together
Let's shape
something
